Charlottesville, Virginia, established as a town in 1762, was incorporated as an independent city in 1888. It is unique in that the city of Charlottesville is autonomous and entirely independent of any county. It is located within Albemarle County.  Charlottesville, VA was named for Sophie Charlotte (1744-1818), the queen consort to King George III of England.

Charlottesville's National Radio Astronomy Observatory houses the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the continent-wide radio-telescope system. The VLBA provides the greatest resolving power, or ability to see detail, of any instrument in astronomy.

But Charlottesville, VA is also the Perfect Weekend Escape!  Most people immediately recognize Charlottesville as the home of three former United States Presidents, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe, as well as the location of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1825. The city is also known for Jefferson's mountaintop home, Monticello, which attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year. James and Dolly Madison’s home, Montpelier, is also located here. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has listed Charlottesville, VA as one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2007.
